Cystitis and incontinence are two of the most common complaints when it comes to bladder problems. What are their symptoms and how to deal with them? We suggest how to avoid them and what to do when they occur.

Bladder inflammation

Causes

Urinary tract infection is nothing more than the presence of microorganisms in the urinary tract. The cause of the appearance of urinary tract infection is most often the E. coli bacterium. This infection is much more common in women than in men due to the short urethra and the short distance between the anus and the urethral outlet.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of cystitis include pain or burning when urinating, the need to urinate frequently or immediately, and pain in the pit of the stomach. However, pain or burning during urination does not always indicate a urinary tract infection. Such symptoms can be the result of inflammation of the urethra, so if these symptoms appear, be sure to see your doctor for tests. Most often in such a case, doctors order ultrasound of the kidneys and urinary tract, urography or CT scan.

Treatment

Treatment for cystitis involves taking an antibiotic prescribed by your doctor for several days (usually 3 to 7) based on an antibiogram or one that is usually effective in an infection caused by E. coli. For some patients, especially women, with a history of recurrent urinary tract infection (a history of repeated symptoms of cystitis with the presence of bacteria in the urine culture), it may be possible to start treatment with an antibiotic on its own, after discussing such treatment with the physician.

Urinary incontinence

Causes

Urinary incontinence, or incontinence, is defined as the unintentional and against our will partial or complete emptying of the bladder. The problem of incontinence is considered to be one of the most common chronic diseases of women, although it also affects men to some extent. The most common cause of this ailment is bacterial infections. However, urinary incontinence is often also caused by hormonal changes such as decreased estrogen levels. Other quite common causes of urinary incontinence include hard physical work that affects the condition of the perineal muscles, obesity that puts a strain on the whole body, overuse of diuretics and frequent constipation.

Diagnosis and treatment

Urinary incontinence in itself is a bothersome condition, but it also has a number of additional symptoms, such as pinching or pain and even fever. Therefore, a visit to the doctor may be necessary. In the case of this ailment, most often the diagnosis includes abdominal ultrasound, urine culture, neurological examination, gynecological and/or urological examination, cystourethroscopy. And what is the treatment. It depends on the type of incontinence and the severity of the problem – it can be surgical or pharmacological. In case of women it is also recommended to exercise Kegel muscles regularly. If this problem has affected you or someone in your family, before treatment is successful, it is worth buying adult diapers, which will slightly improve the comfort of life and daily functioning.
